Walking the Golden Bend

...or in other words, the Herengracht; the most impressive canal-side architecture in the city of Amsterdam. Walked most of the length of the Herengracht today & took in some of the sights & sounds of the city. This is a mostly residential area or offices & banks. It was at one time home to some of the most opulent mansions and became known as the Golden Bend. This is because of the great wealth of the shipbuilders, merchants & politicians who begane building homes here in the 1660s.

Very interesting architecture & businesses. It is on this canal that you would find the Bible Museum, the Purse & Handbag Museum, the Kattenkabinet (unusual collection of feline artifacts) among many others. There seems to be a museum for almost everything you can think of here in Amsterdam; the Spectacles Museum, Piano Museum, Houseboat Museum and even a Sex Museum (think I can skip that one!). Not to mention the Van Gogh Museum, Rembrandt Museum & the Rijksmuseum. So I will have no shortage of places to go & things to see. I'll share whatever I can here on this blog...so stay tuned!!
